And then there's Hatty... the best friend of all! Why did he stab us in the back and twist the blade? I mean just this morning he gave everybody flowers and presents and now he goes out of his way to hurt our feelings? Oh, I think not - you can't fool me! Hatty would NEVER betrayal us... b-betray us NEVER! Something fishy's going on here and I THINK I DON'T LIKE IT RIGHT NOW AT ALL. It MUST have something to do with that scary, albeit fashionable hat!

— Narrator, BattleBlock Theater

Hatty Hattington is a character from the BattleBlock Theater series. He was originally a kind-hearted man who had formed friendships with many people. After being stranded at BattleBlock Theater, he was forced to wear a possessed hat that turned him into a lifeless ruler over the theater's inhabitants. While he was rescued by his friends, he was doomed to remain in his defunct condition.

Background[]

Hatty was known for being a well-mannered man who had hundreds of friends. One day, he and his friends embarked on a voyage on Hatty's ship, the S. S. Friendship. The ship is suddenly caught in a fierce storm, which causes some of the passengers to fall into the waters below, and eventually crashes onto an abandoned island. Seeking shelter, the player character leaves the ship and explores the deteriorated BattleBlock Theater. They find Hatty being held captive by a group of cats, one of whom puts an ominous, glowing hat on Hatty's head. Hatty notices the player, who is subsequently imprisoned by the cats. The cats free the player from their cell, and force them to participate in deadly games as they watch for their amusement from the theater. As the player overcomes challenges created by the cats, they collect gems, which are used to unlock other captured crewmates.

While being transported around the prison, the player frees their other friends, and wonders why Hatty, who is now the theater's manager, would betray them. They conclude that the hat he was forced to wear is possessing him. The player's performance in the theater draws a large audience, and the cat wardens use the money earned from the theater to create larger death traps. Hatty appears to be forced to watch the player's show in a sluggish trance. As humans are scarce on the island, the cats are taking advantage of the shipwreck to fuel their theater performances. Their loyalty to the theater dates back to their former owner, theater aficionado Purrham Furbottom. Furbottom set out to the created the most magnificent theater in history, and the lavish theater performances he oversaw were discussed by many people. As Furbottom forbade intermissions, he would die from fatally defecating himself. For millennia after his death, his hat was passed on to different owners of the theater. The hat could only be worn by those who had qualities like Furbottom, such as charity, bravery, and handsomeness. Whoever wears the hat is the ruler of the cats, and would take care of their wellbeing, but would meet with a violent death. The hat has left Hatty in a comatose state and he has not moved since being forced to wear it. His inattentiveness toward the cats caused them to become disorderly, and they seek to kill Hatty and search for a new leader.

Maneuvering through the final courses, the player arrives at The Vault, where Hatty is being held. He doesn't move, so the player carries him out of BattleBlock Theater, which is crumbling apart. The rest of the S. S. Friendship's crew has broken out of their prison, and fights off the cats trying to bring them back to the theater. The crew flees the island. Overjoyed at being free at last, the crew tries to celebrate with Hatty, but he is still unresponsive, and cannot move, talk, or blink. The narrator begins to sing a sad song, mourning Hatty, but then cheers up and sings a happier song. As the boat rocks, it sends Hatty's body into the sea. When it sinks to the bottom, the hat lands on Hatty's head again. It begins to glow, and fires a laser upward that throws the boat above the water, destroys an airplane and Alien Hominid's Alien Ship, and vaporizes a giant bear creature in outer space. The narrator says he understands the event, but does not explain to the viewer. The story is later continued in the video game Pit People.

Dino Run DX[]

Pit People[]

Hatty appears as an NPC in Pit People. He plays a vital role in the game's backstory. Hatty appears in the game's intro, which retells BattleBlock Theater's ending. It shows the Space Bear that was destroyed by the laser in BattleBlock Theater falling to Earth. Another Space Bear, Honey Kiss is enraged and seeks revenge against Earth's citizens. At one point, he kidnaps Horatio's son Hansel. His plan to destroy Earth is, at first, foiled by Horatio and his friends. After his defeat, Honey Kiss explains his reasoning for wanted vengeance: the Space Bear that was indirectly killed by Hatty's laser was his best friend, Honey Hug. Honey Kiss blames humanity for his death. As he remembers Honey Hug's last moments, Honey Kiss is enraged and grabs Hatty from ocean floor. Hatty's laser activates again, and Honey Kiss uses the laser like a sword, destroying various planets, including Earth.
